Put a rich man on mule-back, and the mule will throw him juat as quick as he would a beggar. Like the dog in the manger, the nose is above kissing and is always ready to interfere with the kissing of others. Call at Jacobi's for Garden Hoes and Bakes, Shovels, Spades, Axes, &c. There you have the lowest prices. t To-day has been one of the warmest of the season but the heat has been tem pered by a magnificent breeze from the South. One case of drunkenness was disposed of by the Mayor this morning by impos ing a fine of $2 which increased the city treasury to that extent. On and after to-day Capt. Sonther- kland's wagonette will make regular trips to Wrightsville Sound, leaving here every evening at C o'clock, and leaving the Sound, on the return, at 7 a. m. A half dollar of 1807 is worth seven ty-five cents. A fire-cent piece of 1795. in good condition, is worth one dollar. Fifty-cent pieces for 1813, 1819 and 1824 are worth sixty cents each. A half cent for 1851 is worth eight cents. Deputy Sheriff N. V. Sutton, of Bla den county, passed through this citj to-day en route for Goldsboro, haviDg in charge Noel Terry, colored, who he is taking to the colored insane asylum at that place. Terry is in iroas and is at times quite violent. There is every prospect now that the usual Fourth of July regatta among the yachts of the Carolina Yacht Club will be a very lively and interest ing one. The metal of the new yacht Glide is yet to be thoroughly tested and the old yachts of the fleet are in an ex cellent trim. Rice Flour. The first rice flour made in North Carolina was turned out to-day at the Cape Fear Flour Mills in this city Messrs Norwood Giles & Co. concluded to try the experiment of making rice flour and had about 600 pounds of rice run through the. Cape Fear Flour Mills The rice flour is very pretty and j we think will be very popular with house keepers. The Atidresa This Evening, The attention of our readers is again invited to the fact that Capt. N. F. Thompson will deliver an .address on Temperance this evening at the Opera House under the auspices of the "Wo man's Christian' Temperance Union. The admission is free and the public general ly, and especially the ladies, are invited to attend. A Quiet Wedding. Quite a number of of the Fayetteville excursionists remained over here yester day. Last evening a gentleman and lady who were a part of the party were mar ried and took a trip to the Sound. They returned to their homes by to-day's- steamer, a happy conple, to receive the congratulations of their f riemdi, who are as yet in ignorance of the nuptials. Da(h or Captain Phillips. We are sorry to learn of the death of Capt. C. B. Phillips, of the U. S. Engi neer Corps, which occurred at his home, in Norfolk, last Tuesday night. Capt. Phillips was in charge of the Cape Fear River and Bar Worka for some time, but was relieved at his own request, and was placed in charge of the works in the Northeastern cart of the State. H bore the reputation hero of being an ex cellent engineer. Daily WILMINGTON, N. C, The Gounod Hailcal Club. By invitation ef the Wilmington Am ateurs the Gounod Musical Club, of Charlotte, will present the Pirates of Penzance at the Opera House in this city on Monday evening next. The gen tlemen and ladies will arrive at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon. On Tuesday they will be taken te the Sound by the Am eteurs and return to their homes on Wednesday morning. It is to be regret- ed that our visitors cannot be i ad need to remain loager with us. Tickets fer the performance will be on sale at Heins- berger's to-morrow morning. Mr. Haverly Knight, of the extensive Carpet House of Beeve L. Knight & Co , Philadelphia, .fa., reports the case of a friend whose hand was absolutely deformed by rheumatism of seven years standing, who was cured by the use of three bottles of St. Jacobs Oil, and ren dered able to use his hand perfectly. Death from Mock oranse Poison Mr. M. Bellamy lost a very valuable cow on yesterday afternoon from death caused by eating mock orange bushes. A flower garden near Mr. Bellamy's residence on Market street was being cleaned up, and among other bushes a quantity of mock orange was thrown in the street. The cow eat very heartily of it and died in about half an hour. It is said that the mock orange contains quite an amount efprnssic, acid which is deadly poison. This is the second or third cow which has come to its death by eating mock orange. Enforce the cattle or dinance and cows won't die from mock orange poison because they will not be in the street, to eat it. Ran Orer bj a Ileaij Truck A little son of Mr. George Stienken was run over by the water works truck this morning about 9 o'clock, a the corner of Fourth and Harnett streets. The little fellow is only about five years old and has frequently been pulled from under the wheels of the truck, it ap pears he has been in the habit of run ning in between the wheels of the truck and trying to jump on the body, which is only about six inches from the ground. He has been warned against it and once or twice has been carried to his parents by the driver of the truck and apprised of the danger the little fellow was run ning. This morning he made an attempt to jump on the body of the truck, when he fell and the wheel passed over ' his right leg, breaking it near the hip bone. Medical aid was summoned to the little fellow who is now resting as easy as could be expected, but who is suffering very much from his crushed leg. Lipplncoti's Magazine. Rideing, to whom ample facilities were afforded by Lord Lytton. In "Zoological Curiosities" Dr. Os wald continues his very entertaining ac count of "Our Four-Handed Relatives," with some piquant illustrations. "Pal metto Leaves," by Rev. Robert Wilson, is a capital sketch of Charleston, S. C, describing both its permanent features and present aspectand condition. "Ranch Cure," by Alfred Terry Bacon, may be regarded as supplementary to Dr. S. Weir Mitchell's well-known paper3 on "Camp-Cure." In "A Trip to Brighton and the Goodwood Races." J. A. Dickson gives a lively account of the characteristic incidents and scenes of an English race-cuorse, and of the journey by stage-coach from London, with pleas ant glimpses of the country traversed. Mrs. Mary Treat's "Observations on a Colony of Slave-Making Ants" exhibit the close study of animal life that dis tinguishes the trained naturalist, and will be found both curious and entertain- msr. Across the Gulf," by Rebecca Hard ing Davis, is in the best vein of a writer whose stories are never weak or common place. The other short stories in the namber are "Harcourt's V'line Mango," by S. A. Shields, and "Six Views of Miss Starr," by Elyn Duykwood, both clever character sketches evidently drawn from life. ' The serial, "Craque o'- Doom," maintains its interest while drawing to its conclusion, and the editor ial departments are as well filled as usu al. Is It Remarkable 1 It is a little remarkable to see ice in the gutters of the streets in thi3 locality on the 17th day of June, yet such was the case to-day. Ice, and a plenty of it could be seen in the gutter near the corner of Walnut and Nutt streets about 4 o' clock this p. ra. We think there was at least 500pounds altogether in three large blocks which' tumbled off an ice cart en route for the railroad depot cnarlotte Wins. The series of "chicken disputes," had in thi3 city during the past three days, were closed yesterday afternoon. It is the first regular main between Wilmington and Charlotte cocks and we are sorry to say that Charlotte got away with us, that city being credited with 9 fights to our 7. To-day the defendant was ar' raigned in the above named Justice's Court and bound over to the next term of the Criminal Court in the sum of $50. Rosa Pearsall, colored,4for assault and battery, was ordered to pay the fine and costs. John Hill, colored, for assault, was com. mitted in default of payment ef costs. Jno. Smith, alias R. J. Hubbard, colored, was arraigned before Justice Mills upon the charge of assault and battery and was committed in default of payment of fine and costs.J Phil Turner, colored, charged with larceny, was committed for trial until 4 p. m., on the 18th instant, by Justice Millis also. 1 lie Colored Delegation. A delegation of colored from this State, thirty strong, headed by George W. Price, Jr., of this city, called on the President at the White HouEe, on Wednesday, and were granted an audi ence. The chairman of the delegation read an address to the President, set ting forth the claims of the colored men to office, and also read the resolu tions adopted by the colored convention held in Raleigh last month President Garfield received them very graciously, aud promised to be guided by the rec ommendations contained in the address, so far as lay in his power. In concluding the interview, he shook hands with each one. The delegation went to Washing ton City aud returned on the excursion train. " Terrible Loss of Life.
